Early Childhood Screening

Fall 2020
Early Childhood Screening (Hybrid or Virtual) Options

The early childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid learning and growth. Screening in early childhood supports children's readiness for kindergarten and promotes health and development. Screening includes vision and hearing, height and weight, immunization review, large and small muscles, thinking, language and communication skills, as well as social and emotional development.  Early Childhood Screening is a state requirement prior to kindergarten entrance in Minnesota Public Schools but is recommended at age 3.  Minnesota Department of Education website.

Because early childhood screening is required, there are now two options available:

Hybrid  Screening - combination of phone and in-person

  • Phone call with screening staff to complete a social-emotional questionnaire.
  • You and your child would then come on-site at the DPC for a developmental screen.  This portion would include:  -15 minute Early Childhood Screener - to complete the developmental screening which includes large and small muscles, thinking, language and communication skills, as well as social and emotional development.
  • 15 minute Screening Nurse to go over your child’s Health & Developmental History, vision and hearing, height and weight, and immunization review.
  • Health and Safety guidelines will be followed based on CDC recommendation.

Virtual Screening

  • You will receive a link to complete the ASQ Online developmental and social emotional questionnaires.
  • We will schedule a phone consultation with you and our screening staff to summarize the results of the ASQ Online questionnaires.
  • We will schedule a phone consultation with you and our Screening Nurse to go over your child’s Health & Developmental History, vision and hearing, height and weight, and immunization review.
